Two wins secure Lady Jacket playoff spot

Mineola used a pair of heart-stopping five set wins last week to maneuver into a playoff spot in the district volleyball standings.

In last Tuesday’s match with Mt. Vernon, the varsity Lady Jackets looked like they might cruise to victory, taking the first game 25-10.

But things changed quickly, and Mineola had to rally to win the second set 25-22.

Still victory was in sight, but the Lady Tigers had other plans as they tried to hang onto the final playoff spot.

They grabbed set three 25-20 and set four 25-21 and appeared ready to take the match with a 10-5 lead in the decider.

That’s when Mineola struck back, taking 10 of the final 13 points to close out the win 15-13 and set off a celebration.

Quitman also presented a challenge and broke on top with a 25-23 win in the first game Friday at Ballard Gym. Mineola rallied from 23-18 to tie things, only to have the Lady Bulldogs capture the set.

Mineola battled to take the second set 25-20 and appeared to grab command with a third set win at 25-11.

Quitman had other ideas and won set four 25-19 to even the match.

This time, Mineola stormed out to an early lead in the deciding set and withstood a Quitman rally before closing out the match 15-9.

That left Mineola at 5-2 in the district standings and assured of a spot in post-season play.

The Lady Jackets were at winless Winona Tuesday night and close out the season against the district’s top two teams, at Harmony for a 4:30 p.m. start Friday and then hosting Chapel Hill Tuesday with a chance to perhaps get into a second-place tie.
