Triple-threat twins sink Quitman
Eight three-pointers by Mineola twins Kyra and Jayla Jackson were too much for Quitman girls to overcome Friday as the Lady Jackets secured the final district playoff spot in 13-3A.
Jayla Jackson opened the game with Mineola’s first points on a trey and added two more in the quarter as Mineola took a 16-8 lead on the way to the 47-37 win.
Kyra Jackson got into the act with four more in the second quarter to bolster Mineola’s lead to 31-19. A Mylee Fischer bucket and foul shot accounted for the rest of Mineola’s points in the quarter.
When Jackson hit her third in a row, it gave Mineola its largest lead at 25-8.
She added a fifth three-pointer in the second half to give the sisters 24 of Mineola’s 47 points on threes. She ended the night as leading scorer with 19 points with a couple lay ups in the second half.
The Lady Bulldogs narrowed the halftime lead to 31-19 on three baskets by Allie Berry and a lay up and free throws from Sadie Vander Schaaf.
Quitman had its best quarter in the third, scoring 11 points to cut into the Mineola lead at 39-32. Vander Schaff helped fuel the comeback with three buckets. An Allie Berry three-pointer had Quitman as close as it had been since the first quarter at 36-30.
Quitman kept it close until the closing minutes as points became hard to come by to start the fourth quarter.
Mineola had scored only a Mylee Fischer free throw when Quitman’s Berry sank a three to get the Lady Bulldogs within 40-35 with 4:15 to play. An Annabelle Popek free throw at the 2:36 mark got it down to 40-36, but Quitman could score only a late free throw the rest of the way while Mineola converted enough of theirs to secure the win.
After Paris Spigner sank a pair of charity shots, the Lady Jackets benefited from three consecutive rebounds after missed free throws to push the lead to 45-36, and Kyra Jackson’s steal and lay up put it out of reach at 47-36 with less than 25 seconds left.
Mineola qualified for the final playoff spot and faced New Boston Monday night.
