Throw depicts downtown mural

The Mineola Main Street Board presented a woven throw of the Mineola mural to artist Lauren Pitre in Monday’s City Council meeting. Pitre, a Mineola High School and UT Tyler art graduate, spent months in late 2018 working on the mural that graces the wall on Line Street. She was assisted by Sam Cook of Longview. The mural was the concept of Annalee Cook, a high school student at the time, and incorporated an element by Braxton Pool, who was in elementary at the time. Pitre has gone on to do numerous works in other towns as well as for private customers.

Now the mural is being celebrated in a throw that is being sold by Mineola Main Street. They are made in America, 100% cotton, color-fast, preshrunk, washable and dryable. They weigh about two pounds and may be purchased at Mineola City Hall or at the Mineola Historical Museum for $75 each. For those unable to go to City Hall, they will be available for purchase online, but sales tax and shipping charges will apply.

Last year, among the many things canceled was Main Street’s major fundraiser, the Wine Train. Despite that, and thanks to many successful years and hard work of volunteers, the program was still able to add to the festivities in downtown at Christmas and to assist some Main Street businesses with exterior improvements.

The throw represents a “revival” fundraiser for the program,  created by the same company that has created previous “tapestries” for Main Street years ago. However, this one is a horizontal format to be thrown over the back of a couch or love seat, while previous ones were vertical.

Main Street had hoped to offer them for sale prior to Christmas, but COVID created numerous delays in the process, including the shutdown of the mill in North Carolina.

“So now,” said Main Street Manager Doris Newman, “it is here at the perfect time for a Mothers Day or Fathers Day gift or even early Christmas purchase. But it would also be an ideal graduation gift. What better gift for the graduate than a little bit of their hometown as they begin new phases of their lives?”

The throws are available at Mineola City Hall or call Doris Newman at 903-569-6183 or email mainstreet@mineola.com.
