Sunday Market in the Park to feature myriad activities at Quitman venue
Quitman’s first “Sunday Market in the Park” will debut Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Illa Wisdom and P.J. Kalenak are the forces behind a new venture to be held at Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman.
They are encouraging people to bring their picnics and lawn chairs to enjoy the many activities at the park. There will be vendors, a swap meet, entertainment and games every Sunday beginning April 11 through Sept. 12 from 1-5 p.m.
Wisdom hopes to bring the community together with the weekly event.
“It’s an opportunity to bring Quitman and the surrounding areas in a fun and family friendly way,” Wisdom said. “We have a beautiful park and we need to use it to meet with our friends and hopefully make some new friends.”
The organizers also plan to have area churches have services at 11 a.m.
This Sunday Faith Baptist Church will be meeting at the pavilion with a message from Pastor Mike Midkiff in a special “Praise in the Park.”
There will be an open worship service each Sunday at 11 a.m. prior to the market opening at 1 p.m.
The organizers hope to make the weekly event a place to shop locally and promote local businesses and civic clubs. It will be a place where kids have a safe gathering place to enjoy the park and also give others an opportunity to learn more about the community.
They will also give civic and service groups an opportunity for fundraising. Students will be able to have a showcase for their projects and skills.
Learning skills through demonstrations will be held under the pavilion.
This Sunday Brooke Rogers from Rock Solid Fitness will make a presentation for children at 2 p.m. followed at 3 p.m. for a “Gun Safety for Children” demonstration by Terri Horne.
Vendors have an opportunity for a 12x12 space for only $20.
