The Friends of the Quitman Public Library is planning a fall book sale Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in the library’s Thurman Shamburger Community Room.

Officers for FY24 are President Jackie Blalock, Vice President Sue Reynolds, Secretary Anita Nance and Treasurer Rebekah Yeager. Friends of the Library invite the public to join this volunteer group of library supporters at monthly one-hour meetings on second Thursdays at noon. On Thursday, Oct. 12, a book review will be presented by Regina Gilbreath.

National Family History Month is observed in October. The library along with the Wood County TX Genealogical Society invite family researchers, historians and storytellers to commemorate their family’s rich and deep history this month by allowing us to assist with beginning your genealogical tree. The society will meet on Monday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. in the community room.

Looking for a place to hold your next meeting or event? The library offers a spacious community room with the latest technological needs as well as a kitchenette. For lease information, contact the front desk at 903-763-4191.

There is something happening almost every day at the library. Shutterbugs of all levels are invited to the In-Focus Photography Club of East Texas that meets on last Mondays at 5:30 p.m. Free knitting and crochet instruction class meets each Thursday, 2-4 p.m. Students of all ages and skill levels may bring their own supplies and patterns to trade. Wood County Metal Detector Club, led by Jerry Tinney, meets on first Mondays at 6:30 p.m. Whyte Dove Writers’ Club meets on second Tuesdays from 6-8:30 p.m. at the library. Consider joining this distinctive group of local published authors. The genealogical society meets on each third Monday at 5 p.m. in the community room. Follow the society’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/groups/woocotx. Painted Ladies, formerly the Lost in the Woods Painters, meet regularly for painting instruction and projects. Contact Jean Chancellor, 903-763-8585 for more information.

Notary service is generally available at the library during regular business hours, but to guarantee an appointment, call 903-763-4191. Effective Sept. 1, notary fees are $10 for each document notarized per Texas Government Code 406.024.
