Police canine set to retire, hopes to live with handler

In a brief meeting last Tuesday, Wood County commissioners acknowledged the donation of police canine Mata in 2020 so that the dog might remain with its handler upon retirement.

The dog and his handler, Prec. 2 Constable Kelly Smith, will be retiring at the end of the year.

Such dogs are usually retired with their handlers, but that decision rests with the company that donated the dog, K9 Offices of Houston.

An amendment was approved with Tyler Technologies, which operates the county’s court and jail software. It will allow those serving on juries to be paid with prepaid credit cards as opposed to having to issue checks.

The lease for the house at Lake Quitman was approved for $650 per month to Todd Jenkins. Prec. 1 Commissioner Virgil Holland said Jenkins works for the county and helps keep an eye on things.

An interlocal contract with the Texas Dept. of Public Safety was approved for the failure to appear program. DPS troopers would be notified when stopping traffic violators that they are wanted for failing to appear on charges through county courts.
