New voting system put to the test
The Wood County elections office is working quickly to implement a new voting system for the Nov. 7 state constitutional amendment election.
The old electronic system outlived its usefulness and could no longer be repaired.
The county purchased new machinery which includes reader/scanners for hand-marked paper ballots and an ADA-compliant machine that can be requested by any voter.
It produces a ballot that is then fed into the scanner.
Each polling site will have two of each of those machines plus two polling pads that is used to check in voters and can be taken to voters outside who are unable to come into the polling site.
The first public test of the equipment was held last Thursday at the elections office in Quitman.
Unlike in recent years when several interested spectators showed up, only County Tax Assessor Collector Carol Taylor attended.
Following that, the office is conducting training for election judges and then for election clerks.
The early voting for the amendment election begins Monday, Oct. 23 at the elections office.
