A 50-year old Winnsboro man was killed in a two-vehicle crash north of Quitman Friday afternoon just before 5 p.m. Tomas Domine-Castro, Winnsboro, was killed when his 1995 Nissan pick-up careened with a Ford Flex driven by Jeremy Brooke, 32, Nederland.

Domine-Castro was alone in his vehicle while Brooke’s wife Kristina, 31, and son Weslynn, 2, were traveling with him. Domine-Castro was taken to ETMC Quitman and pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. by Wood County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Tony Gilbreath. Kristina Brooke and Weslynn Brooke were taken to ETMC Quitman. Kristina Brooke sustained three broken bones and numerous bruises. The toddler, who was in the back seat in a rear-facing carseat, was released with no injury and Jeremy Brooke did not sustain any serious injuries. Both parents were wearing their safety belts. Mr. Castro was not wearing a seatbelt.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Steven Nichols was assisted by Trooper Larry Vaughn at the scene of the accident. In the report it stated Brooke was traveling south on U.S. Highway 37 while Domine-Castro was traveling north.

Brooke’s vehicle crossed the yellow dividing line and began traveling in the northbound lane of Highway 37 and the front left portion of the Flex and the front of the pickup crashed.

A witness who was traveling directly in front of Brooke said he observed the vehicle gradually travel into the northbound lane and saw it swerve back into the southbound lane as the vehicles collided. Brooke told the investigating officers he might have fallen asleep for a short time before the crash.

The accident is under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
