Mineola marching band claims area championship again

Posted

The three-time state champion marching band from Mineola High School continues to dominate marching performances, culminating Saturday as the Area C champions at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches.

This is a non-advancement year for 1A, 3A and 5A bands, so Mineola will not get to defend its state title again until 2023.

Under new director Jim Best, the band has continued its winning tradition.

In a nod to the change in leadership, this year’s show is called, “The Show Must Go On.”

The band achieved straight ones from the three judges in region marching for the 10th straight year at Mt. Pleasant Oct. 18 to advance to area.

The band was one of 12 to advance to the finals Saturday, where the Sound of the Swarm was ranked first in 19 of the 21 judging categories among five judges.

The top five bands at area, including Atlanta, Redwater, Winnsboro and Queen City, were the same five bands that finished in the top seven at state a year ago. All hale from Region 4, which placed eight of the 12 finalists Saturday.

The Quitman Proud Blue Band also made the finals and placed 12th in the area. Winnsboro was fourth.

Previous results from the marching season included the Swarm having its first ever performance in a Bands of America contest Oct. 15 at Prosper ISD, with all other participants from larger schools.
