Mineola basketball teams made major advances in securing playoff spots with wins last week over Quitman and Harmony.

Last Tuesday’s games at Quitman were delayed a day by bad weather and played on Wednesday.

The Lady Jackets defeated the Lady Bulldogs 52-25.

Friday they handled Harmony 56-20. Kyra Jackson had a hot night from the three-point line and ended the game with 33 points.

The wins improved Mineola’s district record to 5-3 with the chance to secure a payoff spot in Tuesday’s visit to Winona, a team the Lady Jackets easily defeated in December.

Games remaining on the schedule are hosting Mt. Vernon on Friday, at district-leading Winnsboro on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and concluding the season hosting Chapel Hill on Tuesday, Feb. 6 following a bye on Feb. 2.

The Lady Jackets lost to all three in the first round of district play.

Quitman fell to Chapel Hill Friday 42-26 and dropped to 2-6 in district play. After Tuesday’s bye, the Lady Bulldogs face the two teams they beat in the first half of district play, hosting Harmony Friday and visiting Winona Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Quitman concludes its season with games Feb. 2 hosting Mt. Vernon and at Winnsboro Feb. 6.

Mineola boys finished the first half of district play in second place with a 5-1 mark, after defeating Harmony on Friday 69-59. Mineola got off to a slow start and trailed by 14 points late in the first half before scoring the final five points of the period to pull within nine at halftime.

Another burst to open the third quarter got the Yellowjackets back into the game, and then they pulled away in the final quarter to secure the win.

Braydon Alley had a strong inside game to finish the night with 31 points.

Mineola defeated Quitman last Friday, 61-44.

The Bulldogs fell to district leader Chapel Hill on Friday 72-26.
