Lady Jackets fall behind early and can’t recover
The Mineola Lady Jackets played from behind the whole game and could never challenge the Lady Eagles of Harmony. Mineola fell 46-31 to the visitors in action last Friday.
A slow start plagued the Lady Jackets. Despite turning the Lady Eagles over three times in the opening quarter, Mineola saw their press broken straight up the floor with the Lady Eagles using their height advantage.
During that opening quarter the Lady Jackets committed four turnovers as they aggressively forced the ball in the offensive zone.
At the end of one quarter, Harmony led 10-4.
With 2:58 to play in the second quarter, the score stood 15-4, and the frustration level at the absence of scoring was palatable. It was a critical juncture to the game and possibly the season.
The team answered. Jocelyn Whitehead scored on an aggressive move to the basket, and Mylee Fischer added a score to close the gap to a 7-point margin. Jayden Gardner made a nice move into the lane for two, but the Harmony side kept scoring at pace. At the half the score was 21-10, Harmony.
The Lady Jackets came out with increased vigor in the second half. Despite that effort, Harmony outscored Mineola 11-7 in the third quarter and absorbed all the energy the Lady Jackets could muster. The closest the Lady Jackets came to the visitors was eight points (25-17) late in the third quarter.
Mineola has an excellent chance to turn the corner on the season with Friday’s match-up at Winona.
