Lady Jackets defeat Quitman handily

It was no contest when Mineola’s and Quitman’s varsity softball teams squared off on Tuesday, March 5 with the Yellowjackets dominating 11-1.

The first two innings started off slow for both sides at the plate.

Mineola was three up, three down in the first while Quitman could not take advantage of Addison Marcee’s leadoff walk.

Bulldog pitcher Kennedi Elmore worked around a hit batter and walk in the second with a caught stealing and two strikeouts.

Quitman sent up the minimum in the bottom of the second.

The Yellowjackets took advantage of Quitman errors in the third, scoring three runs. Gracie Lindley walked and Jadelyn Marshall bunted. Lindley scored on the play while Marshall advanced all the way to third on an error. Marshall scored when Kaitlyn McMahon hit a pop fly that right fielder Kylee Harris missed. McMahon advanced to third, and Caroline Castleberry sacrificed her home.

Mineola couldn’t add to the lead after loading the bases on a walk and two singles.

Allie Berry led off the Bulldogs third with a single but was stranded.

Mineola tacked on three more in the fourth.

Marshall walked, and Kaitlyn McMahon and Castleberry singled to load the bases. Jaycee Smith’s two-out double to center brought home all three runners. Kali Chrietzberg reached on an error but Mineola stranded two.

Quitman’s lone run came on a Hannah Holland walk, which was followed by consecutive fielder’s choices by Ashley Davis and Elmore.

Chloe Jones singled to center and Larkin Spears doubled to right to bring home courtesy runner Alexis Frazier.

Journie Wilson led off the Lady Jacket fifth with a hard single to third. Marshall reached on an error, advancing Wilson to second. Kaitlyn McMahon singled to right, and Wilson scored on an error. Castleberry singled to center on the first pitch, scoring Marshall and McMahon. A double play ended the threat.

Quitman couldn’t take advantage of a leadoff single by Peyton Kruckner, with Mineola leading 9-1 after five.

An error to open the sixth did not hurt Quitman as Elmore fanned two.

Quitman managed to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, but a pickoff at third for the final out left the score 9-1.

Mineola added two more runs as Lindley reached on an error. Kaitlyn McMahon doubled to centerfield, advancing Lindley to third. Castleberry sacrificed Lindley home. Mahayla McMahon singled to center to score Kaitlyn McMahon.

The Lady Bulldogs were unable to rally in the bottom of the seventh with three quick outs.
