Lady Jacket relay returning to state
The Mineola girls 4x400-meter relay team will return to Austin for the third straight year after winning the rain-delayed regional final Monday in Whitehouse.
The girls set a school record at 4:02.44 on their way to the win.
Rayie Peebles, Carmen Carrasco, Stephanie Rojas and Olivia Hughes set the mark after placing third in Friday’s preliminaries.
Mineola had posted a 4:07.31 behind Whitesboro and Gunter in the prelims.
All Saturday’s finals were rained out.
Peebles and Carrasco return from last year’s team which placed 7th at state in 4:03.83.
This marks Carrasco’s third trip to state in the event and Hughes’ second (she was on the ‘22 team).
Prior to the girls’ 3-year run, the Mineola, boys were state champions in the 4x400 in 2021.
Quitman’s Dakota Jimenez will also be making it to the state meet in the 800 meters.
Though he placed third in a fast-paced race Monday, his time of 1:55.98 – a personal best – is the best among the third-place finishers from the four regions, giving him the wildcard ninth spot at state.
He has the fourth-best qualifying time.
The first and second place finishers were neck and neck at the finish and timed at 1:55.15 and 1:55.16.
Trey Rushing of Mineola just missed a state invite in the discus with a throw of 150’3” to place third.
