Lady Bulldogs advance to playoffs
Ending their regular season in victory, the Quitman Lady Bulldogs softball team picked up two wins against the Harmony Eagles and Winnsboro Red Raiders to secure the fourth-place playoff spot. After defeating Harmony 3-1 on their home turf on Tuesday, April 16, the Lady Bulldogs successfully defended their home turf on Friday, April 19 against Winnsboro winning 14-9.
Kennedi Elmore returned to the pitcher’s mound from an injury and struck out 11 at Harmony. Hannah Holland batted in two of Quitman’s three runs with a triple to left field. Addison Marcee scored the other run in the first inning when Ashley Davis was thrown out on a dropped third strike.
On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs began the evening by escorting their favorite teachers on the field for teacher appreciation night.
The Lady Raiders kicked things off in the first inning, scoring four runs. Things finally started coming together for the Lady Bulldogs in the second inning. Allie Berry got Quitman on the scoreboard when she hit a single, scoring Chloe Jones. Addison Marcee hit a double to left field, scoring Peyton Kruckner. Hannah Holland rounded out the inning hitting a ground ball to right field that scored Marcee and Berry, tying the score at 4-4.
Winnsboro scored two more runs in the third inning. After holding off the Lady Raiders in the fourth inning, Quitman took to bat and capitalized off of a Winnsboro error to grab the lead. Berry scored first on a single by Elmore. Holland stole home, and Elmore scored on an error by Winnsoboro’s catcher giving the Bulldogs the 7-6 edge.
The fifth inning brought two more runs for the Lady Bulldogs. Marcee singled to short scoring Larkin Spears, and Holland hit a line drive to right field which scored Kruckner.
Winnsboro tied the score at 9-9 in the top of the sixth with a fly ball to left field and a single to shortstop that scored two.
In response, Quitman unleashed in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring five more runs. Kruckner went all the way to third on a bunt that scored Elmore and Spears. Kylee Harris hit a single to second that scored Kruckner. Holland hit a ground ball for a double that scored Harris and Marcee. Three quick outs at the top of the seventh ended the game with the Lady Bulldogs winning 14-9.
The Lady Bulldogs face Queen City in a three-game bidistrict playoff. The first game was Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Quitman and the second is Thursday at 7 p.m. in Queen City. The teams will flip for the location if a third game is needed on Friday.
