Jimmie Drew Burnett Carter, 98, a long-time resident of Wood County, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2023 in Georgetown. Services were held at New Hope Baptist Church, Mineola, on Thursday, July 6 at 10 a.m. Visitation was held from 9 to 10 a.m. Interment was at New Hope Cemetery following the service.  Arrangements are managed by Beaty Funeral Home in Mineola.

Jimmie was born on April 1, 1925 in Wood County. She was the youngest daughter of Robert Clifton and Martha Jane Burnett. She and her four sisters – Almo, Iwana, Morine and Hettie Lou – and one brother – Nimon – lived the life of farmers and had many stories to share about growing up in the Depression, the lessons they learned from their parents, and their many adventures growing up in Wood County.

Jimmie met her husband, Rex Carter, in Mineola while she was a waitress at a local café. She married him on March 3, 1946. Rex had a son, Ray when they married. Ray was joined by Rex and Jimmie’s children, James (Jim Bob) and Janis. They traveled across Texas and New Mexico following Rex’s work with Mobil Oil Corporation. They lived in Terminal, Odessa, Lovington and Hobbs, N.M., Sanderson, Kermit and Wink, returning to Mineola in 1985. They built their retirement home on Jimmie’s parents’ home place east of Mineola. Jimmie joined her daughter, Janis, in Georgetown for the last two years of her life.

Jimmie was a wonderful cook, a sought-after seamstress, artist, gardener and could make anywhere feel like home and anyone feel like they were a member of her family. She loved people and loved to share her cooking, harvests and crafts with those around her. She traveled extensively in the Western United States accompanying Rex as he drilled wildcat wells for Mobil Oil. She fed many people at those remote drilling locations and won the hearts of all those she fed. She was able to fulfill her wish to see the US by making trips to Colorado, Utah, California, Boston, New York, Nantucket and Washington, DC with family.

Jimmie was a faithful Baptist and had a long and loving relationship with New Hope Baptist Church in Wood County. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 937 of Wink, serving twice as Worthy Matron.

Jimmie is survived by her son, daughter and daughter-in-law and their families, James and Brenda Carter of Mineola, Janis and Stuart Jesse of Georgetown and Myrna Carter - wife of Ray Carter of Mexia. She is survived by two nieces, two nephews, ten grandchildren and adopted grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren and adopted great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind countless people whose lives she has touched through her generous spirit and wisdom.

We are thankful and blessed for the love and time we shared with Jimmie as wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and neighbor. We will miss her love, sense of humor, talents and the care she gave us throughout her life.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church.
