Garden club selects yard of the month

Fannie Marchman Garden Club of Mineola has chosen the Hebron residence at 153 County Road 2610 as their December yard of the month.

Bill and Judy Hebron have lived in Mineola for 10 years and bought their home with some already established trees and shrubs. They’ve added many azaleas and a few magnolia trees, as well as planting annuals with purple and red tones in the spring and summer.

They are among many others in this part of East Texas with sandy soil, a mixed blessing. It’s great for good drainage, but since it dries out more quickly in extremely hot summers, it can be difficult to keep plants alive without frequent watering. The Hebrons are replacing several azaleas due to last summer’s drought.

They also do battle with moles and gophers. Bill has used traps this year and hopes for more success in the future.

Bill says that yardwork brings out his creative side, and that with the exception of the hottest days, it’s relaxing. Judy helps with supervision and suggestions on plant placement.

They have placed large decorative urns among the plantings to add visual interest and use a cozy outdoor table and chairs set on pavers to sit and admire their lovely yard when the work is done.
