For the earliest time in Texas, high school football gets under way Aug. 24-25.

Friday finds Mineola opening its season at Canton while the Quitman Bulldogs host New Diana, with kickoff at Bud Moody Field moved back to 8 p.m. due to the heat.

Alba-Golden moved its season-opener at Detroit to Thursday night, and the Panthers started the 2023 campaign with a resounding 56-0 win.

Game time temperature in Canton is 102.

Yellowjackets take the kick off but fumble on their own 15 on the third play.

A slant route on the first play yields a Canton touchdown.

The extra point makes it 7-0 Eagles.

Mineola goes three-and-out and Canton moves the ball after some early stumbles, extending the lead to 14-0.

Jackets get a drive going but intercepted just outside the Canton goal line.

Jackets regain possession on a fumble only to lose it with one of their own two plays later.

Eagles hit a long pass to pull ahed 21-0.

Loooooong pass from Singletary to McMahon and Mineola cuts the Canton lead to 28-12 with the try for two no good, late in the third quarter.

With 3:36 left in the third quarter, New Diana extends its lead to 14-2 over Quitman.

With 2:46 to play Canton adds to its lead 34-6.

New Diana kicks a 22-yard field goal with 3:33 to play to lead 17-2.

Quitman answers with a kick return touchdown and gets within 17-10 with 3:20 left.

New Diana seals it with a late score, 24-10.
