Fish and fun combine for great time at Lake Fork

The Lake Fork Family Fest March 2-3 capped off the four-day Bassmaster tournament at Lake Fork.

It was put on by the Pilot Club of Quitman, Wood County Economic Development Corp. and Sabine River Authority, along with numerous sponsors.

There were free concerts each day, with Eric George on Saturday and Neal McCoy on Sunday. There were plenty of activities for kids, such as the Creature Teacher, who brought a kangaroo, Patagonian cavy, chameleon, rabbit, tortoise, snake, armadillo, tarantula, and scorpion. Another hit was Texas Parks and Wildlife’s catfish tank, where kids could practice catch and release.

“What a great event. We had delicious food trucks, wonderful music and some great vendors. It was a marvelous two days! But more importantly, the proceeds from those two days help support our club’s work in the community, and we have many ways that we give back, large and small,” said Pat Durst, Pilot Club president.

The winners of the pickleball tournament were: Men’s Doubles: First place Weston Baker and Cliff Bake; second place Nicco Warren Eric Milford; third place Jerry Davies and Oscar Rendon. Mixed Doubles: First place Susan Moreno and Brad Stanford; second place Claira Huff and Jerry Huff; and third place Heather Warren and Nicco Warren. Women’s Doubles Skill: Brandi Scharrer and Melissa Johnson; second place Carmen Kosik and Laura Dennis; and third place Selena Reyes and Terri Zetsche

The winners of cornhole were: First place, Ricky Bennett and Stacey W.; second place Aaron Graham and Marlene Martinez; and third place, Enrique Mar and James Hall.

Fishing tournament winner was Trey McKinney, who received prizes totaling $101,000 for his catches totaling 130 pounds, 15 ounces. Second and third place winners were Tyler Rivet, who won $35,000, and Justin Hamner, who won $33,000.

According to marketing directors Kent Huffman and Steve Eggleston, the 2025 Bassmasters will also be held at Caney Point Recreation Area at Lake Fork.
