To the editor,
Jacob Burrell was killed in a hit and run accident on Highway 69 just north of Mineola near the Wood Shed Truss building. For a long time the site of his death was marked by a small wooden cross located way back from the road.
My wife and I recently noticed the cross is no longer there. Can you tell us why it was removed? We also no longer see the road signs which indicated that “Jacob Burrell’s Army” was responsible for roadside cleanup along a portion of Highway 69.
The death of a 15-year-old child is a tragedy; but due to a hit and run makes it even more senseless. His life and death should not be forgotten.

Response to Alba City Secretary Lindy McCarty and Police Chief Tim Koonce Face Questions at the City Council Meeting

The correct spelling of my surname is Smale, not Snell. I spoke to the Alba City Council at their meeting on March 6. My second topic, not reported by you, was regarding the monthly police reports tracking the number of citations issued. I cited Texas Transportation Code Section 720.002 and noted the City of Alba monthly reporting the number police citations is tracking quotas, which is a violation of state law.
During the Alba City Council meeting, Alba Mayor Ted Levitt asked Alba Police Chief Tim Koonce for a quarterly police activity report, showing which police officer did what.
Mayor Levitt’s request of Police Chief Koonce intensified the violation of tracking citation quotas. To Police Chief Koonce’s credit, he was non‐committal to Mayor Levitt’s request for quarterly reporting of Alba police officer’s activities. Police Chief Koonce and all of the Alba City Council members could be removed from office for tracking citation quotas.
After the Alba City Council meeting, Alba City Attorney Jim McLeroy asked to speak with me privately outside of the Alba City Hall. Jim McLeroy is also part‐time Alba Municipal Court Prosecutor, West Tawakoni City Attorney and Sulphur Springs Municipal Court Prosecutor. Alba Municipal Court Judge Charles Busby, of Como, appears to be the City of Quitman Municipal Court Judge, City of Sulphur Springs Municipal Court Associate Judge, and until February 28, 2017, was the City of Winnsboro Municipal Court Judge.
