Downtown Mineola building renovations OK’d
The Mineola Landmark Commission has approved plans to remodel the front of an historic downtown building at 108 N. Johnson St.
Greg McKinney of Cohan Properties plans to reframe the front, install tempered glass and two antique storefront doors, install a new awning and other repairs.
It is estimated to take about three months.
Historic Preservation Officer Doris Newman said McKinney plans to offer the building for sale once it is renovated.
It formerly housed an attorney’s office.
The building dates to about 1900 and the exterior is painted stucco.
A section of brick will be removed from the lower facade and replaced with glass.
The building is located within the historic overlay district which requires approval for such renovations.
The commission discussed reviewing the historic district along with the Main Street district and the National Register of Historic Places district to see if they can be streamlined.
Newman said the city is undergoing an update to its strategic plan, and updating those boundaries will be reviewed.
Plans to kick off the season for the mini-train at Iron Horse Square Park include an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 30 at 10 a.m. at the park, followed by the inaugural train rides at 11 a.m.
Newman announced that repainting the downtown caboose has been completed, and tentative plans to dedicate the 1888 Plaza at Commerce and Johnson Streets are just prior to the March 30 egg hunt at 9 a.m.
The plaza includes public restrooms, charging stations and seating.
