‘Dogs get key win at Harmony

The Quitman Bulldogs got back into the winning column in district action 57-45 over Harmony Friday night. The win put the Bulldogs at 4-3 in District 13-3A and maintained their hold on the final playoff slot.

Quitman is back at full speed after Hunter Jacobs and Thomas Sabedra returned to the line-up after a couple of games.

Quitman’s Levi Thompson started the scoring with a triple in the first minute of action. Harmony went on a 9-0 run before Thompson hit another triple at the 3:33 mark of the first quarter. Harmony took an 11-9 lead, but Quitman came back on a pair of free throws by Jacobs and the score was 11-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The teams battled evenly in the second quarter with the Bulldogs taking a 26-25 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs hit three more triples in the quarter with Thompson, Jacobs and Sabedra connecting the long buckets. Quitman took a 26-24 lead on a driving lay-up by Brady Floyd. An Eagle free throw left it 26-25 at intermission.

The teams stayed close in the third quarter with neither able to get more than a three point lead. Floyd hit a trey at 3:25 tying the game at 36-36. Floyd got a pair of steals and floor length drives to score four points, giving the Bulldogs a 40-38 lead going into the final eight minutes.

The Bulldog defense and rebounding on both ends of the court took control in the final period. Jacobs, Thompson and Landon Richey scored seven points at the beginning of the quarter making it a 48-39 Quitman lead. 

The Eagles cut the Bulldog lead to 50-45, but Quitman roared back on a bucket by Thompson and Floyd drive down the lane for a score, along with a free throw giving the Bulldogs a 55-45 lead with 1:17 to go. Quitman got two more points on free throws by Jacobs and Richey to secure the victory.

The Bulldog balanced scoring attack was led by Thompson’s 18 points, 16 from Floyd and nine by Richey.

Eighth-ranked Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill leads the district followed by Mineola, Winnsboro and Quitman.

The Bulldogs played Winona at home Tuesday, travel to Mt. Vernon Friday and host Winnsboro Feb. 7.
