Democrats award Thompson scholarships
The first awardees of the Dr. Charles Thompson Memorial Scholarship were presented this summer to Sol Torres from Winnsboro High School and Lauren Dickerson from Mineola High School for $500 each.
This scholarship was created by members of the Wood County Democratic Club in memory of Thompson’s leadership as Wood County Democratic chair for over 17 years, first club president and active member, as well as being an educator in several school districts including Quitman ISD.
Thompson served as local, district and state legislative committee representative for the Texas Retired Teachers Association. He has inspired generations of students and individuals to realize their full potential which would in turn improve their lives and the lives of the people around them. It may be safe to say that Wood County is a little more prosperous thanks to him.
“We would like to help continue his legacy by awarding students who share Dr. Thompson’s love of learning and service to others,” Democrat Club President Madelyn Gibson said.
Students from all Wood County ISDs are eligible to apply.
