Davis withdraws from runoff for Prec. 2 constable

Posted

Joshua Davis, candidate for Wood County constable in Precinct Two in the Republican primary, has withdrawn from the May 28 runoff.

Davis finished second in the three-man race to replace Kelly Smith, who did not seek reelection to a third term.

Davis and Bobby Tucker were slated to appear on the runoff ballot.

But now Tucker will be declared the winner and has no opposition in the November general election.

On his campaign page, Davis said, “…it is with a heavy heart that I announce I will be withdrawing from the race. This decision does not come without lots of thought and prayer. There are many reasons for this decision. I wanted so badly to believe that the constable position was only a law enforcement position, but unfortunately that is not the case. It is a political position, and I am far from a politician.

“Given the state of Wood County politics I feel that it is not wise for me to continue in the race. While I believe I am qualified and the best candidate for the position, I cannot pursue a position within a county where I am not supported by those around me. While I know I have the support of many citizens, it is apparent from recent endorsements and comments that I will not be supported by many others.”

He also stated that he has upcoming promotions opportunities with his current employer, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office.

Tucker received 756 votes in the March 5 primary, Davis 589 and Stephen Nichols 479.

That leaves only one contest in Wood County in the runoff, for Precinct One county commissioner.

Randy Dunn and Justin Bowring face off to replace Virgil Holland, who placed third in the primary.

It will be the only race on the May 28 Republican ballot, as there are no state or district runoffs.
