County plans to honor its veterans

Wood County will acknowledge the contributions of military veterans with a variety of events.

Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11.

The annual Veterans Day parade in Mineola will be Saturday, Nov., 11 at 11:11 a.m. along Hwy. 80 (Broad St.).

The traditional route begins at Graham St. and U.S. 80 and proceeds west along Broad.

This year’s theme is “Honor, Courage, Commitment.”

At the conclusion of the parade, a program honoring veterans will be held at the downtown gazebo and veterans memorial on Commerce St.

Sponsors are the Wood County Marine Corps League Detachment 1278, American Legion Post 296 and VFW Post 7523.

The 25th annual Veterans Program at Mineola High School will be at 9 a.m., Friday, Nov. 10 in the high school gym. Major Greg McGough, USMC, will be the keynote speaker. He is a 2004 graduate of Mineola High School. The Junior Historians have been presenting the program since 1998. 

The Quitman High School Veterans Day assembly will be held at 10 a.m. at the junior high/high school, 1101 E. Goode.

Yantis ISD will host a Veterans’ Day breakfast at 8 a.m. Friday followed by a program 9 a.m. Check in at the high school office.

Alba-Golden will honor veterans with a breakfast at 8 a.m. Thursday in the high school library followed by a program at 8:45 in the cafeteria.
