County monthly sales tax income rebounds

Sales tax collections for Wood County rebounded from a sharp dip last month.

The March report from the state comptroller’s office shows Wood County collected $360,758, up from $217,220 in March 2023. The $143,000 improvement made up almost all of the $150,000 drop last month.

For the year Wood County has gained $740,757 in sales tax revenue since Jan. 1, compared to $756,152 for a 2% decline over 2023.

The county collects a half-cant tax on all retail sales.

Six cities in the county collect a 1.5% tax on sales, and they combined for $460,181 in the March report. That is a slight decline from the $471,567 they collected in March 2023.

The March report represented primarily taxes collected on retail sales in January and reported to the state in February.

For the first three months of 2024, four cities have shown a slight decline, one has recorded a slight increase, and the city of Yantis is 17.5% ahead of last year.

The monthly report shows gains by Hawkins, Quitman and Yantis and declines by Alba, Mineola and Winnsboro.

So far this year the six have benefited from $1,615,984 in tax income compared to $1,638,284 a year ago.

Alba’s March rebate of $22,895 is a 12.5% drop from last March when $26,166 was received. For the first three months of the year the city’s sales tax revenue of $89,225 is up about 1%.

Hawkins received a March rebate of $38,241, up 4.36% from $36,641 last year. The yearly total of $122,826 is down just over 1%.

Mineola’s March check for $212,581 is off by a fraction from $212,830. That brings the yearly total to $770,686, a decrease of 1.83% to $785,096.

Quitman received $70,882 in March, up from $69,714 last year. For the year the city government has earned $232,423 for a 2.62% decrease from $238,700 a year ago.

Winnsboro saw a monthly decline of almost 9.3% with income of $106,645 in March. It has booked $361,608 thus far in 2024 compared to $368,579 through March 2023.

Yantis received a rebate of $8,934 in March, up 3% from last year. For the year the city has received $39,213 compared to $33,354 in 2023.

Combined, the cities and county earned $820,939 in March. For the year they have received $2,356,741, which is down slightly from last year when $2,394,436 was received.
