Church marks anniversary of 1853 founding

The Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church between Hainesville and Pine Mills celebrates its 170th anniversary Sunday, Nov. 19 with a special service and meal.

The church started as Holly Springs Baptist Church of Christ and first met Nov. 18, 1853 at the residence of J.D.J. Davis, who served as pastor.

Early services were held in a log building and later in a chapel at Liberty Hill, now Pine Mills. A new sanctuary was built on the present site in 1860 and the name was changed in 1865.

The day’s event will get underway at 10 a.m. with a welcome from Bro. Robbie Caldwell.

Music and presentations will follow, including descendants of early Pastor Peter Gunstream, and moments in church history.

Information and an offering for a new building is scheduled for 11:15, and the guest speaker is Raif Turner at 11:30.

Following a group photo on the front porch, a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall and outdoors.
