Caring & Sharing marks 40th year of assisting

Mineola Caring & Sharing celebrates 40 years of service to the community this year.

In October 1983, 20 concerned citizens met for the organizational meeting of a program they christened “Caring & Sharing: Mineolans for Mineola.” The plan was to coordinate efforts of all the programs already at work in the community. The monetary goal was $9,200 or roughly $30 to feed and clothe a child for Christmas.

Former mayor Bo Whitus was elected chair person for the effort and Dan Peacock, former owner of the Mineola Monitor, served as secretary-treasurer. The goals were to gather donations of money, non-perishable food, clothing and new toys for needy families and elderly of the community at Christmas time.

Karen Musgraves designed the C&S logo which is still used today. One of the first fundraisers was the KMOO radio auction, which has been in place for 40 years.

The canned food drive was created by the MHS Student Council and is still a part of the food gathering each year.

In September 1994, C&S received its 501©3 non-profit status. The first directors were Harry and Susanne Curtis, Harvey and Glenda Clements, E. Van and Jane Hawes, Dan Peacock, John Abbott, E.M. Bradshaw, Sam Curry and Odessa Yeager. Sam still serves as a director.

Letters for applying for C&S support will go home with students in Mineola Primary School soon.

Applications may also be obtained through Mineola Kindness Kottage or by calling Project Chair Roy Shockey at 817-475-9840. Also, the QR Code will open to the online application.

Volunteers are needed in every area. If interested in helping with the efforts of the many committees, come to the first volunteer meeting of the year at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Hall.
