Bulldogs drop final game

The Quitman High School Bulldogs ended their season Feb. 13 losing to Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill 81-22. Quitman seniors were recognized before the game.

Seniors Payton Sapp, Carter Smith, Kameran Crockett, Jace Peek and Austin Tanner were escorted by their families and recognized for their hard work on the court this year.

The first quarter was rough for the Bulldogs as they were unable to score. Chapel Hill shot four three-pointers and scored 22 unanswered points. The Bulldogs came into the second quarter with more fire and held their own the first half of the quarter. Sapp was fouled and easily sank both his free throws. The Bulldogs played well defensively and were able to stop Chapel Hill from scoring the first two and half minutes of the quarter.

Daniel Kerenes stole the ball and scored two with a layup. Chapel Hill then scored a triple before fouling Jacob Breding who was attempting a layup with a little over three minutes left in the first half. Chapel Hill had an offensive explosion and scored 17 points in the last three minutes of the quarter to lead 44-4.

Quitman continued to battle on the court throughout the third quarter. Sapp began the quarter with a layup for two points. Klayton Meadows scored a point from the free throw line, and Jace Peek scored two from under the basket. Peek was fouled on the play and added a point from a free throw. In a moment of excitement, Bryson Hobbs jumped up under the basket to catch a pass from Meadows at the same moment a Chapel Hill player jumped up for a steal and the players managed to combine to tip the ball in for a Quitman score. Quitman’s Davis Watson also drove to the basket for two during the third quarter. This was not enough to hold off Chapel Hill’s offensive domination as they scored 17 points to Quitman’s 10 and led 61-14 after three quarters.

Chapel Hill again dominated in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points with Quitman scoring eight. All of the Quitman seniors played most of the fourth quarter with Sapp, Peek and Crockett each scoring two points. With 1:16 on the clock, the seniors walked off the court for the last time, and underclassmen finished out the game. Watson had a jump shot for two points.
