50 years in the salt mine for Sanders

Posted

Billy Eugene Sanders recently celebrated a remarkable milestone at the Morton salt mine in Grand Saline.

About 30 family and friends gathered recently to help celebrate and present him a plaque.

He attended Alba-Golden schools, and as an 18-year-old in August 1973, he took a job with the famed mine that has been supplying table salt with its signature slogan “When it rains it pours” since the 1800s.

During his five decades he has held most all the jobs at the site south of Grand Saline, including tuning an electric fork lift, making the daily drive from Golden. He also helped with the family farm.

He is one of seven siblings, four girls and two other boys, who range in age to 90.

When he’s not working, he loves to hunt and fish.
