Utility bill assistance available in county

High utility bills can be a struggle for households. The summer months are coming with an additional burden. East Texas households may qualify for assistance through federal LIHEAP funding.

Funding is available for Wood and surrounding counties. The program targets elderly, disabled and the working poor.

Greater East Texas Community Action Program administers the program in East Texas. Eligibility is based on household income, citizenship and circumstances.   The application process is currently open.

Individuals may apply by mail or online. The website is www.get-cap.org. A face-to-face interview is not required.

When the required information is mailed, emailed or done online, that individual is contacted by telephone and the case can be completed.

According to Teresa Land, program manager, “We encourage households to apply for assistance as we know the need is great. We are making a special effort to reach people who have never applied. Multiple months of assistance could provide relief into the hot summer months”

Karen Swenson, executive director, said, “Wood and the surrounding area residents have embraced our mail in and online process. It may take some time to gather required information, but the assistance is major. Residents are encouraged to take action soon. “

For more information and the application visit the website at www.get-cap.org or call  800-621-5746. Certain days there may be a high call volume so multiple attempts may be needed. GETCAP programs are available to all regardless of race, color, creed, or national origin.
