Sales tax receipts rise slightly in April

Overall sales tax collections for Wood County cities were up slightly for the month but remain down slightly for the year.

The April report from the state comptroller’s office shows the six cities that collect a tax on retail sales earned $478,941 compared to $474,133 in April 2023.

The April figures primarily represent sales made in February and reported to the state in March.

Wood County government also collects a retail tax of one-half percent and earned $225,967 compared to $219,118 last year.

For the first four months of the year, the cities have combined to collect $2,094,926 compared to $2,112,418 a year ago. The county’s collections of $966,724 for four months are down by less than one percent from $975,271.

The state collects all sales taxes and then rebates cities and counties their shares monthly. The state tax is 6.25% while the cities collect 1.5% for a total tax of 8.25% when combined with the county.

Alba, Mineola and Yantis showed gains in April while the other three were down, Hawkins, Quitman and Winnsboro.

For the year, Alba and Yantis are ahead while Mineola is less than a tenth of a percent behind. Hawkins is down almost 2%, Quitman just over 2.5% and Winnsboro 3.3% for the year.

Alba received rebate of $25,909 for April compared to $22,881 a year ago. For the first four months of 2024 the city has earned $115,135 compared to $111,174 a year ago.

Hawkins received a rebate of $36,697 for April, which fell 4.43% from last year’s $38,410. That brings the yearly total to $159,524 compared to $162,660 in 2023.

Mineola saw a 6.2% increase in April to $230,489. The yearly total of $1,001,175 dropped by almost $1,000.

Quitman had a rebate of $70,584 for April a decline of 2.4% from a year ago. The four-month total is $303,008, or down by about $8,000.

Winnsboro’s April rebate fell almost 8% to $104,524 while the yearly total of $466,123 dropped by $16,000 from 2023.

Yantis brought in $10,745 for the month, up 8.2% from last year. The total for the year of $49,959 is a gain since last year of more than $6,600.

All the entities combined have earned $3,061,650 this year, compared to $3,087,698 a year ago.
