Quitman Lady Bulldogs defeat Alba-Golden

Early season basketball is all about exploring limits and finding out what works. Schemes and moves and passes which may work in practice do not necessarily translate in the ultra-competitive environment of girls scholastic basketball.

Last Tuesdays’ Quitman vs. Alba-Golden match-up, at which the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 59-36, had plenty of searching for what works.

The first quarter was a frenzy of changing possessions, featuring turnovers. Quitman used an effective press – which they employed for three quarters – while the Lady Panthers relied on hustle and anticipation.

The results were practically a scratch as the quarter ended 12-10 in Quitman’s favor.

Alba-Golden’s Kalli Trimble scored on a drive to open the second quarter, tying the score. Lady Bulldog Allie Berry answered with an inside bucket, and Quitman never looked back.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring Alba-Golden 37-8. Quitman’s game was fueled by the excellent backcourt work of Kaylin Sapp, the hustle of Addison Marcee, and the basketball acumen of Allie Berry and Annabelle Popek.

The Lady Bulldogs capitalized on Lady Panther turnovers and worked hard to finish each turnover with a score. The assists were especially reassuring for the home crowd to see, as Quitman consistently sought-out a teammate with a better scoring chance.

To the Lady Panthers’ credit, they went on a 13-point run in the final quarter, as the whole team seemed to settle into a rhythm. The erratic nature of the early game was replaced by determined and prudent basketball.

Lady Panthers Joecey Lewers, Kayleigh Logan and Erin Langston stood out for their commitment and composure.

Popek and Berry were joined in double figures by Autumn Cason for the Lady Bulldogs. Eight Lady Panthers etched the scorecard.

Both of these squads have the talent and desire for excellent seasons. It should be a banner year at the gym for Quitman and Alba-Golden girls basketball.

The next chance to catch the teams at home will be Tuesday, Nov. 28. Quitman will host Grace Community at 5:30, while Alba-Golden will entertain Ore City at 6:30.
