Tommy Drinkwine ruled the diamond last week playing a key role in both Quitman wins over Winona.

On Tuesday, March 19, the Bulldogs took on the Wildcats on their home turf and breezed to victory 23-0 before defeating Winona in Winnsboro 20-0.

Drinkwine led the way offensively for the Bulldogs scoring five runs including a triple in the first inning with a line drive to right field. Davis Watson scored first for the Bulldogs after tagging up when Drinkwine flew out to centerfield. The Bulldogs scored again when Canin Peppers walked while the bases were loaded. Courtesy runner Carter Smith scored on a passed ball while Klayton Meadows was at the plate. Meadows reached first on a dropped third strike and Peppers and Weston Pence scored on the catcher’s error.

The Bulldogs scored nine runs in the top of the first inning. The Bulldogs earned another run in the second inning when Johnny Mullican scored on a passed ball.

Widening their lead considerably in the third inning, the Bulldogs scored 10 more runs to lead the game 20-0. Mullican scored another run for the Bulldogs in the fourth inning when Smith singled to left field.

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the fifth inning and the game was called with the Bulldogs winning 23-0. In addition to Drinkwine’s impressive show at the plate, Watson, Payton Sapp, and Peppers each had two hits and combined for seven RBI. Landon Green was the winning pitcher, with eight strikeouts over three innings pitched. Mullican relieved Green and earned four more strikeouts during his two innings on the mound.

On Friday, Drinkwine led from the mound, pitching an almost perfect game, striking out 15 batters and walking only one. Friday’s game was moved to Winnsboro because of the rain, but that didn’t stop the Bulldogs from running all over Winona. The Bulldogs dominated at the plate, starting things off with Watson hitting a single line drive to left field and scoring when Drinkwine hit a sacrifice fly to center. The Bulldogs scored five more runs in the first inning to lead 6-0. The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the second inning and three more in the third inning to lead the game 16-0.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and the game was called after the top of the fifth inning with the Bulldogs winning 20-0.

Smith led the team offensively with two hits and two RBI and Peppers had one hit for three RBI. The Bulldogs managed to steal bases six times during the games and did not commit any errors.

The Bulldogs will be back in Winnsboro next to face the Red Raiders on Thursday, the 28th at 7 p.m.
