Murder mystery to be directed by area student

Bryant Cox, a 2020 graduate of Van High School, will direct a murder mystery for the Pilot Club of Mineola’s dinner-play fundraiser.

Bryant is a senior theater major at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie. His last year of high school ended with COVID-19, but he managed to place in the top six in the state for UIL interpretation, and the UIL one-act play, directed by Larry Wisdom, earned second in state. Bryant is the son of Wade and Susan Cox of Van.  He, along with Assistant Professor Ronnie Blount, have written “Swordplay: A Murder Mystery.”  Bryant will co-direct and act in the play.

This is the fourth year the Pilot Club of Mineola has presented a murder mystery dinner as their major fundraiser. The service club’s focus is brain-related health and disabilities, along with help for caregivers.  The club sponsors BrainMinder’s puppets for elementary students, which makes children aware of safety rules to keep your brain healthy.  The Mineola Pilot Club partners with clubs in Quitman and Winnsboro, and the Wood County Sheriff’s Department on Project Lifesaver, a tracking system for those with brain-related disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Down syndrome and Autism.

The event is Saturday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at the Mineola Civic Center, 1150 N. Newsom. The Pilot Club will have drawings for some great prizes including two bundles of gift cards, a certificate from Mineola Meat Packing, turquoise jewelry, a wine basket, an air fryer, two Adirondack chairs, kitchen accessories and other items valued at $50 and more. Tickets for the drawing will be $2 and available before and during dinner. In a live auction, a wine basket and trip donated by Charlie and Linda Fry will be up for grabs.

The MHS Anchor Club, which is a service organization sponsored by the Mineola Pilot Club, will have their “Pretty Purses” for sale for $20 each. The group will hold a drawing from numbers on the purses, and the winner will receive a designer handbag. The Anchors will use proceeds from this event for their service projects and leadership training.

Tickets to the event are $35 and reservations may be made by calling Diane Holmes at 903-343-7570. No tickets are available at the door. Dinner will be catered by Fusion in the Woods. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
