Mt. Vernon stops Quitman in four
On a warm afternoon last Friday the Lady Bulldogs of Quitman hosted the Mt. Vernon Lady Tigers. An excellent display of quality volleyball ensued, but the Lady Bulldogs came up short (26-24, 15-25, 22-25, 20-25).
The Lady Bulldogs recorded the first point of the match but did not see the lead again until it was 20-19. Relentless effort had put Quitman back in the first set and clearly rattled the visitors.
Quitman took the first set on the strength of an Allie Berry cross-court smash and a combined block by Ashley Davis and Kinsey Hipp.
The home side came out firing in the second set with consecutive aces by Kallie Hoover. Following one of the longest volleys of the match – which was won on a spike by Mt. Vernon – the momentum clearly shifted. The visitors promptly rattled off 12 consecutive points to propel them to a second-set win.
The third set was the most competitive of the match with six ties, and fierce competition throughout. The Lady Tigers simply finished stronger and took the set.
Quitman was down by as much as nine points early in the fourth set. Scoring throughout the line-up (specifically Annabelle Popek, Kaylin Sapp and Berry) tied the set at 17. Mt. Vernon’s service game largely secured the fourth set and the match win.
The Lady Bulldogs concluded the season Tuesday at Winona.
