Memory care center gets $6 million boost

The Quitman City Council provided the venue for a piece of exciting news last Thursday night.

The Memory Health Life Center project has been approved for a $6 million federal appropriation.

Jennifer Alden, district director for U.S. Congressman Lance Gooden, brought the good news.

The center board is still seeking state funding and hopes to know about that by the end of the week, when the Texas legislature ends its biennial session.

That would put the first phase of the project near its $12 million estimate for the education wing.

In a related matter the council approved the Quitman Development Corporation’s $20,000 contribution to the project. The QDC board approved the funding May 8, pending the council’s final approval.

Alden said the appropriations request will be resubmitted to Congress for each phase of the project.

Mayor Randy Dunn said the congressman has been on board since a meeting two years ago.

The memory center will be constructed on land north and east of the UT Health Quitman hospital.

It will include treatment, education and residential components.
