The Quitman Lady Bulldogs didn’t stand a chance against a tough Winnsboro Red Raider team losing 65-30 on Feb. 6 at Winnsboro.

In the first quarter Sadie Vander Schaaf scored first, sinking two points for the Bulldogs. Winnsboro hit a basket and a three before Quitman’s Autumn Cason went in for two. Senior Ashley Davis hit a triple and Autumn Cason followed with the double. The Lady Bulldogs struggled the rest of the quarter, unable to stop Winnsboro’s offense as they scored six times, ending the quarter on top  21-9.

The second quarter proved even more difficult for the Bulldogs as Winnsboro scored 22 points while Quitman added four. Quitman’s lone player to score was Annabelle Popek. Quitman ended the half trailing 43-13.

Quitman began the quarter with a quick basket from Cason, who scored again after a pass from Ashley Davis who had a great save. Popek and senior Kaylie Wood also hit baskets. Cason led the quarter with six points. However, Winnsboro put 17 points on the board and led 60-23 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs finally out-scored Winnsboro in the fourth quarter, 7-5. Sadie Vander Schaaf scored the first two points of the quarter for Quitman as she drove for a layup. Allie Berry scored a triple with under two minutes left in the game. Senior Kaylie Wood scored the final shot for the Bulldogs with less than 20 seconds left.

The Lady Bulldogs never gave up and played to the very last second but lost their last game of the season to Winnsboro 65-30.

About this past season, Coach Blake Hamrick stated, “I’m proud of the girls for how they’ve competed this year. Every season has its struggles, and this one was no different, but they showed up every day and put their best foot forward. We will miss our seniors a ton but are looking forward to next season with the athletes coming back.”
