Filing underway for March primaries
Filing is underway for the spring party primaries to be held on March 5.
In Wood County, the district judge, sheriff, tax assessor-collector, commissioners in Precincts One and Three and the four constables will be up for election for four-year terms.
District Judge Brad McCampbell has indicated he will seek reelection to a second term, while Precinct Two Constable Kelly Smith has posted that he will be stepping down when his second term ends on Dec. 31, 2024.
Incumbent Commissioners Virgil Holland in Precinct One and Mike Simmons in Precinct Three have filed for reelection in the Republican primary.
Federal and state representatives will be on the ballot for two-year terms, as will the state senate district that includes Wood County for a four-year term and the State Board of Education seat, along with one U.S. Senate seat, held by Ted Cruz, who has filed for reelection.
The filing period is Nov. 11 through Dec. 11.
Republican Lance Gooden of Terrell has filed for reelection for Congress District 5 representing Wood County.
Filing is through the party chairs.
The Wood County Republican Party is maintaining office hours at 706C E. Goode St. in Quitman Mondays from 3-5 p.m. and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9-11 a.m. and 2-4:30 p.m. The phone number is 903-714-3048. The county chair is Kathy Wakeman.
No Democrats had filed with county chair Judy Traylor as of Tuesday morning.
