David Ray Mott, beloved husband, father, son and uncle passed away suddenly on Oct. 26, 2023, at his home in Burke, Va. David was born in Bryan on Sept. 13, 1968 to Saundra and Arnold Mott. He grew up in the small town of Quitman. Dr. Mott was a National Merit Scholar and attended Texas A&M University on an academic scholarship. While there, he earned a BS and an MS in aerospace engineering. He continued his studies at the University of Michigan where he received an MS in applied mathematics and a PhD in aerospace engineering and scientific computing. His work included microfluidic modeling and design methods, the incorporation of advance chemical kinetics in reactive fluid flow models, blast wave effects on body armor and the helmet/head system, and modeling of the Trident missile launch from a submarine. David was highly regarded in his role as a supervisory aerospace engineer manager at the Naval Research Lab. But David’s most important role was as husband, father and son.

David was known for his intelligence and kindness. He was generous and nurturing to all. Everyone was drawn by his quick wit, his kind smile and soft Texas drawl. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and support those at work, school and his community. He was admired by his coworkers for his intelligence and dedication as well as his devotion to his family. His immense curiosity led him to myriad hobbies and projects. He loved to draw, create costumes and decorations for Halloween, and especially help his father rebuild his beloved grandfather’s 1956 red Ford pickup truck. He supported his family in all their activities, whatever they were, attending soccer games and football games (even becoming a cotton candy expert), concerts, recitals, school events and Broadway shows. He was a source of strength, and a thoughtful caretaker to those around him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Megan; and their two sons, Aaron and Parker. He is also survived by his parents, Arnold and Saundra Mott; sister Susan Waddell (Hunt); brother, Larry Mott; and brother, Doug Tankersley (Bonnie); and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his wife’s family, whose lives were immeasurably enriched by his presence.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in David’s name to The National Park Trust, Scholarship America, The Washington Balalaika Society, or another deserving organization of your choice.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032 followed by a reception.
