Wood County Commissioners rolled through a 25-item agenda highlighted by a pair of resolutions.

A proclamation claiming November as “National Veterans and Military Families Appreciation Month” was unanimously approved. The first Military Month was declared in 1996. In the proclamation it states military veterans and their families are the backbone of the armed forces. Military families know what it means to serve and know that service is an honor.

November is also “Home Care and Hospice Month” which honors home care and hospice organizations who meet the needs of our citizens by providing individualized and professional medical care and assistance to the elderly, disabled and chronically ill. Home care and hospice workers help their patients live every day to its fullest, and it is important for their commitment and skills to be recognized and commended.

In another matter, commissioners passed a resolution expressing their commitment to the deterrence, correction and prevention of fraud.

Commissioners passed resolutions to appoint Dr. Beverly Waddleton and George Assaf to the Andrews Center Board of Trustees. Waddleton will be representing Position 4 and Assaf will serve Position 8 at-large.

Dan Strickland received 1,473 votes to be named to the Wood County Appraisal District for a 2022-23 term.

A Memorandum of Agreement was approved with East Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse to provide substance abuse programs and provides recovery support services and a certified recovery coach.

Personnel moves included Jeffrey Baldwin and Delton Graves hired full-time as a deputies; Tamantha Parish turned in her resignation from her jailer’s post; Gerald McCoy retired from his post as a road tech in Precinct 4; and in the Tax Assessor’s Office, Brittny Carpenter was hired part-time and Mandy Hubbard was moved from part-time to a full-time Deputy II position.

In other business, commissioners rejected a bid on construction of a new guy-wire radio tower and equipment. They voted to re-advertise for the construction of a new 400 ft. radio tower and radio equipment.

Commissioners approved the purchase of a pre-owned tractor in Precinct 1 for $65,000. The grant renewal with TxDOT for the Wood County-Collins Airport was also approved.

A workshop was held following the regular meeting. The workshop was used to discuss paper ballots and voting machines. Representatives from Hart, who makes the machines, were on hand to answer questions about the election machine process in Wood County.
