Despite four of six cities showing lower sales than a year ago, Wood County taxing entities

came through the 2025 Christmas shopping season with record results.

Bolstered by Mineola and the county, the seven entities that collect retail sales taxes combined to earn $1,056,192 as their shares of the tax, compared to $1,025,308 last year.

Mineola showed a 9.5% gain over last year with $354,995 collected compared to $324,216 in 2025.

The February report primarily represents taxes collected by merchants in December and

reported to the state in January. The cities received their share from the state comptroller’s

office in February.

All six Wood County cities collect a 1.5% tax, and the county collects 0.5%. Combined with the state’s 6.25% tax, retail items are taxed at 8.25%.

Wood County collected $343,858 this month compared to $314,1455 a year ago for a 9.45%

gain.

Hawkins was the only other city with a gain for February, rising just over one percent from

$56,598 last year to $57,187 this year.

Alba dropped 13.4% to $43,444, Quitman declined 5.5% to $98,383, Winnsboro fell 9.34% to

$141,107 and Yantis was down 15.5% to $17,215.

The six totaled income of $712,333, a slight gain from last February’s $711,152 Christmas

sales.

For the first two months of the year, only Alba and Yantis lag behind last year.

The six have combined for sales tax income of $1,307,433, compared to $1,232,678 a year ago.

Wood County collected $627,623 in the first two months for a gain of 12.2% this year.

The seven entities have earned $1,935,057 in 2026, up from $1,792,056 last year.

Alba’s income has dropped 10.44% this year to $72,728.

Hawkins shows a gain of almost 10.6% to $109,894.

Mineola is up 12.66% to $642,039.

Quitman is ahead by 1.5% from 2025, with a total income of $185,472.

Winnsboro has recorded a slight gain of less than one percent to $268,040.

Yantis is behind by 12.1% at $29,258.
