Wood County Marine Corps League discusses fall events, invites community to join

Members of the Lance Cpl. Shane L Goldman Detachment 1278 of the Wood County Marine Corps League met July 21 to discuss upcoming fundraisers, veteran outreach, and community service projects while encouraging new members to become involved.
Commandant Kelly Smith called the meeting to order following the presentation of the colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and an opening prayer. Twenty-nine members and seven guests attended.
Members approved the June meeting minutes and heard the monthly financial report, which included updates on recent fundraising efforts. Smith reported a successful fundraiser at East Texas Burger and encouraged members to support future restaurant fundraising nights by bringing family and friends to dine at participating businesses.
Planning continues for the League’s annual golf tournament, scheduled for Sept. 12 at Lands End Golf Course in Yantis. Organizer Sarah Lucas said they are seeking golfers, business sponsors, raffle prize donations, and volunteers. Businesses that sponsor the tournament receive recognition through event signage, the League’s website, and social media.
Members also received updates on this year’s Toys for Tots campaign from Steve Lucas. Collection boxes have been placed at several businesses throughout Wood County, and this year’s drive will again focus on providing gifts for teenagers ages 12 to 17, an age group that traditionally has the greatest need.
Preparations are also underway for Wreaths Across America. The local ceremony will be held Dec. 19 at Beaty Funeral Home Cemetery. The League’s goal is to sponsor 720 wreaths honoring veterans buried there, and volunteers will be needed later this year to help place flags and wreaths.
Committee reports included updates on the League’s scholarship program, hunting and fishing outings for veterans, nursing home visits, website improvements, and leadership training planned for August. Members also shared updates on those recovering from illness or surgery and encouraged continued support through visits, calls, and prayers.
Smith also encouraged members to consider serving as community liaisons in several Wood County communities to help strengthen relationships with local businesses, civic organizations, and veterans.
The Wood County Marine Corps League meets on the third Tuesday of each month at its headquarters in Mineola located at 114 S. Johnson. A potluck dinner begins at 6 p.m., followed by the business meeting at 7 p.m.
Membership is open to more than just Marines. Veterans and active-duty service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces are welcome to join. The League also welcomes community members with no military experience who have a heart for serving others and supporting veterans, military families, and local service projects.
Anyone interested in learning more about the Wood County Marine Corps League is invited to attend an upcoming meeting and see firsthand the many ways the organization serves veterans and the Wood County community.
