Wood County Kid Fish Tournament set for June 6
Kids from across the area are invited to cast a line and compete in the annual Wood County Kid Fish Tournament on Saturday, June 6, at the Sabine River Authority Headquarters, 353 Private Road 5183 in Quitman.
The free event, sponsored by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Sabine River Authority, will begin at 8 a.m. and run until noon. Organizers say the tournament is designed to promote fishing as a sport and provide opportunities for young people to become involved in outdoor activities.
The tournament is open to children ages 16 and younger. Children younger than 7 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is free, and a meal will be provided during the event.
The tournament will follow a catch-and-release format, and participants are encouraged to bring cameras to photograph their catches. Fish must be caught using a pole or rod and reel and brought to the weigh station in provided weigh bags.
Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in each category and age group following the tournament.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own rod and reel, although equipment will be provided if needed.
For more information, contact Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens or the Wood County Sheriff’s Office at 903-763-2201.
