Wood County Kid Fish Tournament draws families despite rainy weather
Despite wet and muddy conditions, children and families turned out Saturday for the annual Wood County Kid Fish Tournament at Lake Fork. According to Capt. Louis Dahlman, more than 100 fishing poles were handed out to kids and their families. Dahlman estimated the number of kids fishing at about 120. The event, sponsored by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Sabine River Authority, welcomed young anglers for a morning of fishing, prizes and outdoor fun. The event was held June 6 because the date coincided with Texas’ “Free Fishing Weekend.” Dahlman said the Wood County Sheriff’s Office is proud to sponsor the long-running annual event because it is a way to engage with kids and families in the community.Several volunteers and groups, including the Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis Club, assisted with the event, helping create a memorable experience for participants. While rain fell throughout the morning, the weather did little to dampen spirits as children enjoyed fishing and making memories with their families at the event.
