Wood County gets winter weather
Wood County has received some snow, ice, and below-freezing temperatures, from Jan. 23-27.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Mineola may have received anywhere from 2-9.8 inches of snow, while the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network – which helps give data to the National Weather Service and others – says that Wood County only received “trace” snowfall. Ironically, one National Weather Service map does not note that Mineola received any snowfall.
According to Wood County Emergency Management Coordinator Tully Davidson, emergencies during the storm were kept to a minimum.
“Roads are slick, so be careful, but… no unmet needs that I’m aware of,” Davidson said.
Despite widespread concern about potential power outages, Wood County Electric Co-op Director of Communications Paige Eaton said that there were not many outages.
“We have had a few outages, but not anything that we could not get addressed fairly quickly,” Eaton said.
Davidson agreed that “power outages are almost zero.”
Several services were canceled or rescheduled due to the weather; these include all in-person classes at Jarvis Christian University and all local schools, trash services for all or most of Wood County, and all Amtrak trains.
