Veterans buried at New Hope Cemetery honored with Christmas wreath program
The New Hope Cemetery east of Mineola joined the growing list of American cemeteries that pay tribute to veterans heading into the Christmas season.
Volunteers marked more than 100 graves of those who served with Christmas wreaths adorned with red bows in a ceremony repeated seven times across Wood County and all across the nation.
The cemetery plays host to the graves of Civil War veterans, including one Union soldier.
No veterans from the Spanish American War are known to be interred there, but World War One and Two veterans are represented, along with Korea and Vietnam.
Six men from the New Hope community gave their lives in the Second World War, though their burials were not held there, instead being laid to rest in military cemeteries in Hawaii and Europe, among others.
Special wreaths were set to honor the various military branches of the U.S. armed services.
Marine Corps veteran Jeffrey White was guest speaker and gave an emotional tribute to his grandfather, who is buried at New Hope and instilled in White a passion for service.
A number of the wreaths were reserved for persons who specifically donated them to be placed on particular graves, and they were the first to be positioned.
Then dozens of volunteers fanned out across the cemetery to mark graves that had been identified as veterans.
Each was encouraged to read the names as they placed the wreaths.
