Student-athletes representing Mineola and Quitman will be competing for state titles next week in track and field, qualifying at the regional meet last week in Whitehouse.

Quitman’s Brooklyn Marcee, who competed in four events at the regional finals, will be running the 300- meter hurdles in Austin. Marcee recorded a second-place finishing time of 47.07 seconds.

It took a photo finish as Marcee nipped the third-place hurdler by one one-hundredth of a second when she dove across the finish line.

She was not aware she had secured second place and the coveted state track spot until the results were announced.

Her finishing time was .16 seconds behind Kayanna Cox of Whitewright High School.

In her third trip to the track and field championships, Mineola’s Abeni Kratzmeyer is returning to the Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in an effort to secure her third pole vault championship. Kratzmeyer outdueled White Oak’s Lexi Baker by vaulting 11’6” to take first place at regionals.

Kratzmeyer won the state championship as a freshman and sophomore but was unable to defend last year when the meet was canceled due to COVID-19.

The Yellowjacket boys 4x400 meter relay team of Brady Shrum, Jaxon Holland, TJ Moreland and Morgan Waggoner scorched the competition at the regional finals by posting a 3:24.76 time and eclipsing the second-place Tatum Eagles by three seconds.

Mineola also had several state alternates with third-place finishes. Kratzmeyer was third in the 100-meter dash in 12.43, missing the state berth by two one-hundredths. Jackson Anderson took third in the discus with a 138’1” throw. Tahjae Black’s long jump of 17’1.25” was just an inch and a quarter behind the state qualifier. D.J. Newsome put the shot 45’8.25” to place third

Quitman’s Marcee was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.91. She was fourth in the pole vault at 10’6” and eighth in the long jump. Ford Tannebaum of Quitman placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.56. Adam Blalock of Mineola placed fifth in the pole vault with a personal best 13’. Trevion Sneed finished fourth in the shot put at 44’8”.

Also placing from Wood County were Quitman’s Brandon Jiminez, ninth in the 800 meters, and Shylah Kratzmeyer of Mineola, eighth in pole vault.

The Mineola boys team came in third with 39 points, one behind Daingerfield and 11 in back of the winner, Dallas Madison.

All class 3A state qualifiers will be running at Myers Stadium, 707 Clyde Littlefield Drive, Austin, on Thursday May 6. The state meet will be open to spectators, with single session tickets going for $15 and a day pass $25.

Alba-Golden competed in the 2A region meet in Springtown, enduring heavy rain at times.

Kalli Wright scored the only points, placing fifth in the shot put at 33’8”. Cacie Lennon was seventh in the event and also placed 10th in the 100 meters. Bella Crawford placed ninth in both hurdle events.
