Wood County Sheriff’s deputy, DPS trooper shot, subject killed in warrant attempt
A Wood County sheriff’s deputy, a Texas DPS trooper and a suspect were shot Saturday, Feb. 14 during an attempt to serve six felony warrants, according to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, Cody Lee Henderson, 45, later died.
The Sheriff’s Office has withheld the names of the officers.
Several deputies and DPS personnel went to a home north of Quitman, south of the intersection of FM 515 and FM 2966, to execute the warrants, Wood County reported. The wanted subject, who was inside the house, began firing at officers from a semi-automatic weapon, hitting the officers.
After attempts to get the subject to exit and surrender, the residence was breached, knocking a large hole in the end of the house. The suspect continued to fire at law enforcement, who returned fire.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that they also used tear gas and negotiations in an attempt to get the subject to surrender for several hours.
The Sheriff’s Office said that the suspect was ultimately “transported to Quitman Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”
Both wounded officers were reported in “critical but stable condition.” The deputy sustained multiple wounds, while the trooper had a lower extremity injury, according to DPS. The officers were expected to make a full recovery as of the morning of Feb. 16.
The incident also brought the Wood County Special Response Team and the Texas Rangers.
The wanted subject had the following warrants on his record:
Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Theft of firearm.
Evading arrest with a vehicle.
Two warrants for possession of controlled substance.
