Mineola High School athletes turned in strong performances at the UIL Class 3A State Track and Field Championships last week in Austin, earning several top finishes against the state’s best competition.

Leading the way for the Yellowjackets was senior pole vaulter Tierany Neighbors, who cleared 12 feet, 6 inches to earn the silver medal in the girls pole vault competition. Neighbors’ runner-up finish came while recovering from a fractured back suffered earlier this season.

On the track, Raylie Peebles delivered a strong finish in the girls 800-meter run, placing fourth in 2 minutes, 19.67 seconds. Peebles sat in eighth place after the opening lap before passing four runners in the final stretch. She narrowly missed a medal position by about half a second.
Mineola’s Zane Strange also represented Wood County in the boys high jump, finishing among the top 10 competitors with a clearance of 6 feet, 2 inches. Strange was unable to clear 6-4 at the state meet after previously reaching 6-6 at the regional meet.

The Mineola trio capped successful seasons with appearances on Texas’ biggest high school track stage.

Also making headlines for Wood County was Winnsboro standout Camden Capeheart, who captured two state championships in sprinting events. Capeheart won the boys 100-meter dash in 10.02 seconds and claimed the 200-meter dash title in 20.48 seconds.

In addition to his sprint titles, Capeheart placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 10 1/4 inches.
