Sofia (Sophie) Sauseda Brickey, 92, a devoted mother and pillar of her faith community, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026 in Lamesa surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Lyford on April 11, 1933 to Juan Sauseda and Guadalupe (Lupe) Barrera Sauseda. She married David Cantu Sr., and they had four children, Hector, Norma, Nora and David Jr.

Sophie worked as a seamstress at Dotty Dan for over seven years. Then she worked at Medical Arts Hospital as an EVS tech. In later years, she became a caregiver for many families in Lamesa, Fort Worth and Mineola.

After moving to Fort Worth, she met and married Thurman Brickey. After spending years in Fort Worth, Sophie and Thurman decided to retire in the lovely town of Mineola. She was an active member of St. Peters Catholic Church where she volunteered as a sacristan. She prepared the church between services and planted and manicured plants in the church garden for over 20 years.

She was an avid walker and loved walking in the parks near her home. Sophie also loved gardening. Her backyard was a beautiful garden that grew everything from jalapeno peppers, persimmons, peaches and grapes. She also had chickens that gave her fresh eggs which she always shared with neighbors and friends. Sophie often used the bountiful harvest from her backyard to cook wonderful meals. She was always willing to feed others that needed a helping hand. Her love, servants’ heart and spunk will be greatly missed.

Sophie was an exemplary mother figure and human being. She had an ability to remember every birthday, anniversary and important date in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, never failing to send a card or make a call. She embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit and unending generosity that could be seen in her care for her family and friends. Sophie spent many wonderful years spreading joy to any and all those around her. A comfort to many and a joy to all, most of her time was spent taking care of her family, friends and community.

Sophie’s nurturing spirit, unwavering support and boundless love will forever live on in the hearts of her children, Hector Cantu and wife Grace of Lamesa, Norma Dillon of Arlington, Nora Molinar and husband Tommy of Fort Worth and David Cantu Jr. of San Angelo; siblings, Tiofilo Sauseda of Lamesa and wife Irene, Elida Vera of Fort Worth, Senaida Barrientos of Lamesa, Mary Alice Gunter of Cumby and Dora Garcia of Lamesa; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Guadalupe Sauseda; daughter, Delma Cantu; sisters, Lydia Lara and Janie Johnson; brothers-in-law, Heliodoro (Lolo) Vera, Margarito Lara (Mayo), Jesus Barriento and Johnny Garcia; former husband, David Cantu Sr.; and husband, Thurman Brickey.
